Collins graduated from Kenyatta University in 2024 with a Second Class Upper in Business Administration. He had a 3-month internship at a Nairobi logistics company, had volunteered with a community library in Kiambu, and had tutored fellow students for two years. When he came to us, his CV was one page of academic qualifications and a skills list that included "Microsoft Word" and "team player."
Twelve applications. Zero responses. The problem was not his experience — it was that his CV made his experience invisible.
If you are a fresh graduate in Kenya right now, here is how to build a CV that actually works.
The Fresh Graduate Mindset Shift
The biggest mistake new graduates make is apologising for their inexperience — either explicitly ("I am a fresh graduate with limited experience") or implicitly, by writing a thin CV that lists qualifications without substance.
You have more to offer than you think. Your internship, attachment, volunteer work, class projects, leadership in university clubs, part-time work, and any freelance experience all count. The task is to translate that experience into the language employers understand: outcomes, contributions, and transferable skills.
Structure Your Fresh Graduate CV This Way
Professional Summary — Lead With Ambition, Not Apology
Three lines. Name your field, your degree, your most relevant experience, and what you bring. Example: "BCom Finance graduate from Strathmore University (First Class Honours, 2025) with hands-on experience in financial analysis through a 3-month attachment at Stanbic Bank Kenya. Strong foundation in Excel financial modelling, IFRS accounting standards, and client relationship management."
Education — Make It Work Harder
Your degree is your headline credential. List institution, degree, graduation year, and class of honours. Then add two or three relevant coursework highlights, your dissertation topic if relevant, and any academic awards. If your CGPA is strong (above 3.5 or Second Upper), include it. If it is not, omit it.
Internship and Attachment — Treat It Like a Real Job
This is where most fresh graduate CVs fall completely flat. Do not write "assisted with daily tasks." Write what you actually did and what came of it.
Weak: "Assisted the finance team with data entry and reporting."
Strong: "Prepared weekly variance analysis reports for the finance manager, identifying a Ksh 340,000 budget discrepancy that was subsequently corrected before the quarterly audit."
University Projects and Achievements
Your final year project, any research papers, case competition wins, or group projects with notable outcomes all belong on your CV. Frame them as professional work, not academic exercises.
Leadership and Volunteering
Were you the treasurer of a student society? Did you organise an event that 400 people attended? Did you coach a sports team or teach literacy skills at a community centre? These demonstrate initiative, responsibility, and character — qualities every employer wants in a junior hire.
Skills: Be Specific, Not Generic
"Good communication skills" is on every single CV in Kenya. It means nothing. Instead: "Delivered client presentations to senior management at [employer]" or "Produced weekly briefings for a department of 40 staff." Show the skill in context.
For technical skills, be specific about your level: "Advanced Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, financial modelling)" is more credible than "Microsoft Office."
One Page or Two?
For fresh graduates: one page. Every line must earn its space. If you genuinely have enough relevant content to fill two clean pages, two pages is acceptable. Never pad to fill space — a one-page CV with strong content beats a two-page CV with weak content every time.
